DEFINING CRISIS

crisis_M

The term “crisis¨ is reserved for those “emergencies” that have an important negative impact. They require extraordinary personnel and technical skills and support. Crisis affect the ability of an organisation, of a community or a nation to accomplish its mission, development and ordinary functioning. A crisis has the potential to “bringing an organisation into disrepute and imperils its future profitablity” (Lerbinger O. 1997: “The crisis manager: Facing risk and responsibility”, Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum).

If a risk occurs and is not well managed, it can become a crisis. With other words: crisis can be defined as a risk manifested.
